Not into nuc sims like 688 I or Fleet Command? Did you ever want to play your favorite WW II sub sim as part of an online group? Well you can when you become a part of the Pacific Thunder Campaign. PTC is an "Online Fleet" of devoted Silent Hunter players who conduct their war patrols as US submarine commanders stationed in the Pacific during World War II.

The goal of PTC is to recreate as accurately as Silent Hunter will allow the submarine war in the Pacific. SH does a tremendous job in providing a great deal of historical accuracy already but PTC carries it a step further. You'll be assigned to a Squadron in either SubPacFlt of SubAsiatic/SoWesPacFlt and be given the command of your own boat. You'll receive orders that are historically based and using Silent Hunter and a few add on utilities you'll be challenged with all of the restrictions and handicaps that the actual skippers had during the war.

PACIFIC THUNDER CAMPAIGN FAQ

I didn't think Silent Hunter could be played online.

Well, Silent Hunter can't be played "multiplayer" as some other subsims (eg. 688 I Hunter Killer), but by using a little creativity and a lot of input from the participating skippers we have been able to develop an "ONLINE" game using SH and e-mail.

What version of Silent Hunter do I need to be able to participate?

Any version is acceptable. The only difficulty may be in regarding patrol zone selection or custom missions, but we can work around almost any challenge. If you have, or can get your hands on the Silent Hunter Commander's Edition you would be good to go.

I checked SSI's site for the realism patch that I see everyone has but I can't find it.

All of the utilities you will need to participate are located on  Hawk's Silent Hunter Utilities website. They're a breeze to install and simple to use.

I don't know a great deal about WW  II submarine history, so I might be at a disadvantage.

Not really . . . The orders issued by ComSubPac will provide some guidance as to what went on during the war. While the orders you'll receive are not always the actual orders issued during the war, they are all researched and historically accurate. Some orders are very specific. Some are designed just to give you a feel for the situation. Many of the PTC skippers are very well versed in the history of the sub war so all you would need to do is ask. You'd be amazed at the amount of talent and knowledge that is participating in this campaign.

What's YahooGroups?

Pacific Thunder groups is a mailing list (formerly known as as e-groups and Onelist) dedicated to the WW II sub sim and is available to anyone interested in this terrific game. While it is not exclusively for members of the campaign, it is a very useful tool for distributing updates and information. Hawk's Silent Hunter Forum is also a gathering place for our skippers and all SH fans.

What's a SubRon?

SubRon is a military abbreviation for Submarine Squadron. We take a little bit of license in how we use them. During WW II a squadron (SubRon) actually consisted of two or more divisions of six submarines. The submarine fleets (SubLant, SubPac, SubSoWesPac) were made up of several squadrons. Our SubRons function more like the historic division, but SubRon sounds a lot cooler :)

How often do we play?

We conduct two cycles a month. The first cycle runs from the 1st of the month through the 15th. The second goes from the 16th to the end of the month. So, you'd be running two patrols per month.

I don't think my personal schedule will allow me to run two patrols a month.

No sweat . . . we're very flexible and we can accommodate individual scheduling needs.

Why do we need to submit a detailed Patrol Report? I would think that the totals would suffice.

The purpose of the campaign is to try to recreate as closely as possible the actual events of the submarine war in the Pacific. The motivation is not to see who can rack up the highest tonnage totals; rather it is to play Silent Hunter by experiencing all of the challenges that the actual skippers had to endure. Some of the handicaps are provided by SH (eg faulty torpedoes) others are issued via orders received from ComSubPac. The purpose of the patrol report is to help to maintain the campaign's integrity and historical accuracy. For example, harbor attacks were a rarity during the actual war; however, by reading the submitted patrol reports it became obvious that had become very popular in PTC because they allowed for huge tonnage tallies with very little opposition. An adjustment was made prohibiting harbor penetrations during the campaign which allows for much more realistic tonnage totals. The second reason for requiring detailed patrol reports is to provide an opportunity for the participants to pick up hints, tips and ideas to help improve Silent Hunter gameplay.

When can I sign up ?

You can sign up for PTC anytime. PTC II is running right now and registration is accepted throughout the course of the campaign. You might want to get a jump on things and get on board early for for the next campaign . . .  or sign up for both right away.
